Quality Public Education

Steph was born Stephanie Anita Thompkins on the westside of Detroit. She attended Pattengill Elementary School before moving to Northwest Detroit with her parents and two older siblings. One of Steph's earliest educational memories was that of her 1st grade teacher telling the students stories everyday and the kids not doing any classwork. When her family moved and her mother went to enroll her into the neighborhood school, she was told she would have to repeat kindergarten because at 6 years old, she couldn't spell the words "what" and "want". Her Mom, being the advocate she was, refused to let that happen and Steph went on to graduate from Cass Tech and Michigan State's James Madison College. Access to quality public education didn't just become an issue in Detroit, it's been an issue and Stephanie A. Young will stand with our public school administrators, teachers and students to demand fair, equitable and quality education in Detroit classrooms. She will also fight for increased access to afterschool and out-of-school enrichment programs for all students. Studies have shown that students who participate in activities after the normal school day perform better academically, socially and emotionally.

Thriving Communities

Steph is the mother of two handsome and intelligent young men, both of who graduated from her alma mater, the prestigious Cass Technical H.S. Her oldest son Darius, now in his senior year, is an artist studying illustration and animation in Indiana - on the road to Pixar. Her youngest son David, is an accounting major in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, on the road to Price Waterhouse Cooper, Hollywood, California office. Then there's her 4-legged son, Spirit, a beautiful shepherd pit-bull mix. Grandmont Rosedale residents can catch the two of them strolling the neighborhood regularly. A thriving community where people can feel safe, young families can raise their children, seniors can enjoy retirement and all people, including returning citizens, can find gainful employment is what Stephanie will continue to fight for.

Healthy Families

As a public servant for over 30 years, Steph has worked to improve the quality of life for the residents she has served as Neighborhood City Hall Manager and Director to Manager of Outreach for the Detroit Area Agency on Aging, to Department of Neighborhoods District Manager to Executive Director of the Community Education Commission. In every one of these roles Stephanie focused on providing resources and services to help build Healthy Families. A healthy family is a family not in jeopardy of losing their home for back taxes. A healthy family is a family with medical insurance who uses it proactively and which includes treatment for mental wellness. A healthy family is a family of retirees who don't have to pay taxes on their pensions. I have and will continue to fight for healthy families in District 8 and the City of Detroit.
